Live Forum Series: Piezoresponse Force Microscopy

Electromechanical coupling, along with elastic and transport properties, is one of the primary functionality of inorganic, organic, and biological materials. Piezoresponse force Microscopy has emerged in the last decade as a universal and powerful tool for probing ferroelectric, multiferroic, and biological materials through detection of electromechanical responses. Despite the apparent simplicity of the method, its technical implementation, data interpretation, and underlying principles are not straightforward. The questions such as

  • how do I distinguish the PFM image from cross-talk
  • how to acquire high-resolution spectroscopic data , and how to interpret it
  • what are the advantages and pitfalls of resonance enhanced PFM
  • can PFM be done in conductive liquid
  • what are sensitivity and spatial resolution limits
  • can vex both experienced SPMer and a newcomer to the field.

To address these issues, the Nanoprobe Network will host an on-line Live Forum to discuss AFM force calibration. On Friday, May 22 live at 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time, AFM experts will convene at the Nanoprobe Network website to discuss the topic of Piezo Force Microscopy (PFM). Special expert guests for this chat will be Dr. Andrei Kholkin from the University of Aveiro, Portugal, and Dr. Alexei Gruverman from the University of Nebraska. Please join us! The Live Forum can be found here: http://nanoprobenetwork.org/bbpress/forum.php?id=26.

I encourage you to post your thoughts, ideas, questions, answers, interesting results, literature citations, and other pertinent information anytime in advance, and the please join in then for live discussion.

Membership is required to participate in this Forum. To sign up, go here: http://nanoprobenetwork.org/register.

As a member, in addition to contributing to any of our Forums, you can also:

  • start creating or editing content within “Probe-Pedia” – the “Wikipedia”-inspired on-line guide to probe science and technology
  • read and comment on the Featured Blogs contributed by leading experts
  • participate in a Discussion Forum by asking or answering questions with other users, and making suggestions on how to improve the site itself
  • view, download, or contribute images, audio, video, software, news, and events

I look forward to interacting with you on-line on May 22nd.
