We all know about imaging atomic structure with various scanning probe tools, but what about imaging properties at atomic resolution? Some recent observations point to exciting potential in this area. We may not be surprised by STM related results of local properties: Don Eigler’s iconic quantum corrals, Seamus Davis’ elegant band gap mapping, etc. But last year Sigiomoto et al mapped chemical forces with AFM at atomic resolution! Even more surprising, Cho and colleagues probed surface potential of individual Si atoms!! And recent characterization of resistance, capacitance, conductance, electromechanical coupling is at or approaching 1nm resolution.

Together the latter examples inspire us to question what the ultimate limit in spatial resolution will be for so called “continuum” properties. I think we are on the brink of significant breakthroughs in this field. Where do you think this will lead??

see Physics Today June and ACS Nano Sept. for some details.
